Ye Serve the Lord

The Christmas Play Ye Serve the Lord was written by Mrs Helen Mortimer (first Principal of Elmhurst Ballet School in Surrey) in 1942 as a tribute to her son Michael, who was killed in action that year. It was performed annually at the school, and in 1946 at the Royal Albert Hall in front of Princess Elizabeth, when a newly written scene was added for 150 children, representing the Children of the World. It enjoyed a revival in 2005 &2006 when it was performed at St Georges Chapel, Windsor.

The play is dedicated to Children of the World, with opportunities for lots of children to be involved, for apart from the main speaking and dancing roles, there is an enormous crowd scene at the end. It has never lost its relevance, as the finale brings in refugees fleeing from the terrors of war. Children of all nations come to Mary and the Child to find peace, following her out of the building singing a hymn of praise and hope.

We look forward to bringing the Christmas Play Ye Serve the Lord to Lavenham, as the words are as relevant today as they were when they were first written, and it promises to be a moving experience for children and adults alike. It will be produced by Sue Peterson RAD RTS, and the Musical Director will be Kevin Slingsby, with sound, lighting and stage design by Revd Grahan Naylor. There will also be opportunities for older children and adults to get involved as well. There is no charge to audition or perform.

If you or your children would like to take part, please email play@lavenham.church with name, age and school year group, or visit the website or phone 01787 852787.
