SUMMARY:Towns and Trade in Suffolk in the Middle Ages from 1100 to 1500 (Pr
ofessor Mark Bailey) - Lavenham Historical Talks
DESCRIPTION:Between the Norman Conquest and the end of the Middle Ages the
urban structure of England in general\, and Suffolk in particular\, was tr
ansformed. The commercial revolution in the twelfth and thirteenth centuri
es comprised economic growth\, but also institutional reforms which laid t
he basis for modern commerce and urban centres. Yet it was the adjustments
in the century or so after the arrival of the Black Death in 1349 which a
re of greatest significance\, because by 1500 Suffolk was the most urbanis
ed and industrialised county in Britain.\n\nMark Bailey is Professor of La
te Medieval History at UEA. He is author of several books\, including ‘M
 edieval Suffolk: A social History’.
