Friends of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Lavenham
Afternoon Visit to Ely Cathedral
The Committee has arranged a visit to this historic Cathedral – one of the most spectacular buildings in East Anglia. With its dramatic outline above the surrounding fenland, on a site dating from 673, it remains one of the highlights of the medieval world. Rich in history and architectural detail, spread across the centuries, I was awestruck on a recent reconnaissance visit. To quote Simon Jenkins, from his England’s Cathedrals, ‘After each visit, I am left in a state of wonder that England could have created such a place eight centuries ago.’
The visit of 2 1/2 hours will start with a guided tour of the Cathedral’s ground floor, covering the main areas, before a short stroll to the Almonry Kitchen, where tea/coffee and cakes will be provided. There will be time, returning to our coach, to linger in the Cathedral and to visit the Cathedral Shop.
Coach will leave the Village Hall Car Park at 12.30pm (sharp), returning from Ely to arrive back in Lavenham around 6pm.
Cost (unchanged from 2024) £35 per person, for visit, tea & transport. Cheque payable to Friends of Lavenham Church, to be delivered to Charles Dinwiddy, Hall House, Hall Road, Lavenham CO10 9QU. Alternatively, payment can be made online direct to Barclays Bank, sort code 20-83-50 account number 00391271, under advice to our Treasurer, Ian Thompson: ianmargaret@btinternet.com
Payment will secure your booking for the visit on a ‘first come’ basis. (Please note: as a coach has been booked, cancellations will not be possible unless a replacement can be found.)
